Brabantia Competition - Design Your Bin: NDA Winners!

Earlier this year the National Design Academy (NDA), in association with Brabantia, launched a competition to create a new design for Brabantia's retro bin range.

The ‘Design Your Bin’ competition was launched in April and received 1,033 stunning designs from all over the world from Belgium to Brazil, China to Chile and the Netherlands to New Zealand.

Brabantia’s Communication Manager Anne Slaats said: “The entries this year were incredibly creative and inspirational.  Deciding on just one winner was almost impossible, so we selected two; Pop Kitchen and Kitchen Collage!  Its important for us to offer consumers the chance to design ideas for future products.  We’ve now got two new eye catching designs and are very excited about seeing them go into production next year.”

As well as seeing their design produced and on sale as part of Brabantia’s range in 2013, the overall winners selected by its International Design Panel, also received a bin featuring their design and 1,500 Euros worth of Brabantia products.

All NDA students who entered the competition had their designs judged separately for an exclusive chance to have their design made as a one-off special.

David Slater, Sales Director at Brabantia, said: “It’s been a pleasure to have worked with the creative talent from the National Design Academy. The standard of design concepts from the students at the National Design Academy has been exceptional and we are pleased to announce two winning designs."

The winner, chosen by NDA judges, was Victoria Hedley for her fantastic Pink Bin design, she said: "I wanted to create a design that was both simple and contemporary, which would appeal to a wide consumer base. There is a huge market for the well known ‘Sugar, Tea & Coffee’ containers and so I had an idea that a series of similar bins could meet popular demand".

Victoria is a student on the Foundation Degree in Interior Design. "I am so thankful to the NDA for offering such a fantastic distance learning degree. I work full time and it would have been impossible for me to study full time. As much as it is a challenge at times; juggling a degree with work, it is completely worth it. It is so rewarding, enjoyable and allows you to be as creative as you wish".

One of the runners up, selected by the Brabantia judges to have their design made, was Leo Nixon, the 7 year old son of Natalie Nixon who is also a Diploma student at NDA, she said: "We love the bin and Leo thinks it's amazing. I'm too scared to use it so it is on display for all to see in the playroom."
