BIID Annual Meeting 2012 inspires NDA students

Five NDA students attended the British Institute of Interior Design's launch of its inaugural one day, Annual Conference on 21 June in London.

This year's theme was 'Celebrating British Design' and featured an inspiring line-up of speakers and experts drawn from right across the design spectrum. Topics of the day included: British Design Heritage; What Makes British Design Unique and The Future of Design.

Many high profile speakers attended, including: Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum; Dr Glenn Adamson, Head of Research at the V&A; Sir Paul Smith, iconic British designer; Sue Timney, Interior Designer and President Elect of BIID; Christine Losecaat, Creative Industries Advisor to UK Trade & Investment and Katy Lithgow, Head Conservator at the National Trust.

NDA Degree student, Verdranka Burgar, was impressed with the day: "I found the meeting very interesting and would advise everyone to attend these events if they can, as they are enormously helpful and inspiring for Interior Designers who are new to the industry."

NDA Director of Studies, Anthony Rayworth, summed up the day: "I left feeling invigorated. The debates on a variety of topics such as 'What is the essence of British design in our multi cultural society?' were tackled brilliantly by the expert speakers who demonstrated that design is still flourishing despite the recession. 

"They also confirmed that design is not just about creating luxury, rather its purpose is to improve everyone's lives throughout society by increasing performance; reducing materials; simplifying manufacture and being sustainable for future generations.

"Congratulations to all at BIID for organising such a stimulating conference.  I am already looking forward to the next one."
