Blogging has become hugely popular in recent years and many have taken their blog to high heights and now run them as a business. This is of course not possible for many design bloggers as they often have full time jobs, family's or other commitments. The joy of just expressing a love for design is enough.

Our Diploma in Professional Interior Design is perfect for bloggers who have no qualifications and all the course material is delivered online, so you can study wherever you are. Great if you're a bit of a globe hopper!

We also provide a number of workshops for our students at the NDA, which gives you the chance to meet with other designers, discuss ideas and opinions.

5 reasons to be a British Institute of Interior Design member

Students at the National Design Academy receive one years student membership to the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) as part of their course, which enables them to form a solid foundation for a future career.

So if you're an interior design student and not a BIID member you're missing out! Here are the top 5 reasons why you should be a part of the Institute.

1. Credibility. Being a member of a well renowned institution like BIID automatically increases your professional stance, making you more attractive to prospective clients, businesses or suppliers.

2. You will enjoy the benefits of complimentary industry/fair tickets and discounts on trade magazines.

3. Stay ahead! Every student member will have the opportunity increase and build on their skills and knowledge with BIID's range of "Professional Development" seminars, lectures and regional events.

4. Students have the chance to participate in an annual Student Mentoring Programme which allows selected students to work alongside industry professionals and gain valuable on the job experience.

5. Network heaven. You'll have the opportunity to converse with other student members, Associates and established Members of the Association. A great way of building links within the industry.

Celebrating our students

Many of our students are full time mothers, fathers, employed or have other commitments as well as working hard to complete their course. We understand our students put a huge amount of effort and determination into their study and we want to champion their excellent work.

Foundation Degree (FdA) student Tatjana Macarova has wowed the tutor team at the National Design Academy with her digital Reflective Design Journal.

Here are a few snap shots of her journal, it's guaranteed to inspire you if you're studying an Interior Design course, or just simply a keen amateur!

Her fabulous renders, annotations and imagery are presented beautifully in the style of a scrapbook and finalised with subtle elements of detail.

If Tatjana's work has lit a spark and inspired you to study interior design, it's easier than you think! If you don't have any qualifications that's okay, you don't need any to enroll on our Diploma in Professional Interior Design which is the equivalent of an A-Level.

If you already have this level of qualification or an equivalent, you can enroll on our Foundation Degree (FdA) which is years 1 & 2 at university. Please feel free to check our website for more information or you can click onto the Interior Design course FAQ page at the top!

Former NDA Tutor designs for retail giants!

Former National Design Academy tutor Laura Olivia is taking the design world by storm! After being chosen by Jethro Macey to exhibit at this years New Designers "One Year On" event, her prints have wowed retailers Wilkinson's, who want Laura to design a new stationary range.

Laura was approached by the brand whilst exhibiting at the New Designers event earlier this June, where the suggestion of a possible partnership evolved.

Columbine - New Laura Olivia Collection

Laura said, "they were clearly impressed with my work and we had a conversation about future opportunities. A while after the show they asked for some examples of work to figure out which projects they would like to work with me on and then came back to me with a brief to submit some initial ideas. They really liked my artwork and so I secured this amazing project!”

Orchid - Laura Olivia New Collection

The Nottingham based designer has been commissioned by companies as far as China, but has never seen the final result. This range will be in stores all over the UK, which Laura is very excited about, “to be able to walk in to a store that is just around the corner and see my work will be amazing! I know it will be a great moment when I finally see the finished product and will definitely motivate me."

Zinnia - Laura Olivia New Collection

The brief is top secret, believe us we've tried to swindle a few sneaky tip offs, but Laura stands firm! One thing she has revealed is alongside this project, she is in the early stages of designing a collection of kitchen textiles and dinnerware also for Wilkinson's.

You can expect to see Laura Olivia's new stationary collection on the shelves next summer, so keep an eye out!

NDA interview George Clarke!

Television personality and Architect George Clarke is well known for his popular property shows like "Restoration Man" and the "Home Show". He's now busy preparing for the showing of his new series on channel 4, "Empty Homes" and recently set up a new business, George Clarke + Partners.

Despite having a diary full to the brim, Mr Clarke took time out of his busy schedule to speak to us about what he looks for in an interview, how to create the best foundation for a career in design and his top tips for re-vamping your home. Enjoy!

Working as successful Architect and being the face of hit property shows like "The Home Show" and "Restoration Man", you will have seen an abundance of homes in a sorry state. What is the most common mistake people are making when it comes to re-vamping their homes?

"Firstly, the most obvious issue is that people aren't getting the right professionals in to do the work. People need to hire credible and highly recommended tradesmen, especially a builder, not a friend-of-a-friend. It's important to hire a great Architect and have really good people on site. Also, making sure the design is right for the intended space is very important.

"I would say, particularly in regards to grand design schemes, invest in a great Project Manager. They are worth their weight in gold and having this person on site will save money in the long run!"
"Finally, people tend to make too many compromises and concentrate too much on things like pretty cushions. There's no point spending a lot of money on furniture and expensive things if the boiler is 10 years old. Making sure the fundamentals like plumbing, insulation and electrics are right should come first."

You're the ambassador for the very successful Grand Designs Live events, what is your mission statement? Do you have one?

"Well, if I had one it would be something like "Your home is the centre of your world and the most important thing". I love my home! Homes are not just a space, they're a beautiful and happy place to be, full of emotions and memories."

They say "education is the key to success", how important is it for aspiring design and architect students to gain credible qualifications and experience, especially as the industry is moving towards more professional and standardised practices?

I left school when I was 16 and went straight into working for an Architecture firm, training as an apprentice. I learned on the job about designing and building, as well as doing one day a week at college. Having that balance of academic and vocational study is important. This way you can also learn things which you wouldn't necessarily in a classroom. I learned how to properly communicate with people, whether it was through emails, drawing or a phone call. Education is everything.

It can be a huge fight to secure a job in the current economic climate, particularly in the design industry, what advice would you give to job seekers that will set them above the rest of the competition?

I hate looking through CV's, they say the same thing each time. I like to meet people and speak to them in person. I look for true passion and yearning to learn as well lots of enthusiasm for design and Architecture.

Can you share with us the three golden rules which you live and work by?

Well, the first would be "life is too short, live it to the full". The second one, which may seem a bit corny but it's so true is, "Home is where the heart is", because my home is everything to me. And finally, " work should also be play". My life and work are the same, I enjoy it so much and people should be able to work hard and play at the same time. I hear people talking about  how they hate their job, well change it I say, do something you love.

(Question from NDA student Cath Gittins) -  Do you think that home staging is a useful marketing tool and is it possible for home staging to become as popular here in the UK as it is in the USA?

Home staging is big thing in America and sometimes this method of showing a home off can feel false, like it's someone elses life. Maybe we're missing something, but us Brits are a bit more straight forward and get on with it.

FAQ Week! Day 4

Q4: How do I send my work in? (Particularly relevant to Professional Curtain Making & Soft Furnishings students)

A4: It's easy, just label each piece of work with your name and student number and post to the Academy's address.

FAQ Week! Day 3

Q3: When I view the course notes online, I can't access the websites shown, why?

A3: This is because you are viewing the course material as a "download" version that is only for print. The course material should be viewed from the main page, which will allow you to click onto the links.

FAQ Week! Day 2

Q2:  What file type should I save my work in, particularly if I am to upload on the VLS?

A2: It is best to try and save your work as PDF files, this is particularly relevant to PowerPoint files. Students can save a PowerPoint presentation PDF in the "save" menu. This avoids any errors, because how the work has been designed by the student may not transfer over correctly to their tutor. Particularly if  a special font has been used. Saving by PDF ensures all content is kept as it is intended.
